Wool & Delicate Wash

Wool & Delicate Wash

🌱 A gentle soap-based wash for wool and delicate fabrics

Wool and delicate fabrics need to be cleaned, but they don’t respond well to harsh products. Many commercial laundry detergents rely on enzymes, brighteners, fragrances and high alkalinity - all of which can strip fibres, leave residue, and shorten the life of delicate garments.

The solution is much simpler. Switching to pure soap for wool and delicates is one of the simplest DIY swaps you can make. It avoids chemical build-up, keeps fibres soft, and helps garments last longer.

Why soap works for wool and delicates

Soap cleans by loosening dirt and oils so they can be rinsed away. When used in its pure form and at low concentrations, it’s gentle enough for wool, silk, and other delicate fibres.

Unlike many detergents, real soap:

  • Does not rely on aggressive enzymes
  • Leaves less residue behind when rinsed properly
  • Is biodegradable and low-tox

Used correctly, soap cleans effectively without compromising fabric integrity.

Recipe & Instructions

The two soap options that work best

Both of the options below are real soap, not detergent. You can choose whichever suits your washing habits and fabric care preferences.

1. Liquid solution – Castile soap

Castile soap is a mild liquid soap made from vegetable oils and lye. It contains no synthetic fragrances or fillers and is commonly used in both household and personal care products.

Castile soap is suitable for:

  • Woollens
  • Delicates
  • Handwashing
  • Machine washing on a gentle or wool cycle

To use:

  1. Add 1–2 tablespoons of liquid Castile soap
  2. Use in place of commercial detergent
  3. Choose cool to lukewarm water and low agitation

2. Solid solution – Coconut soap flakes

Coconut soap flakes are simply pre-grated hard soap made from coconut oil. They’re hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and easy to adjust for small loads.

Coconut soap flakes are suitable for:

  • Wool and delicates
  • Sensitive skin
  • Handwashing or machine washing

To use:

  1. Start with about 1 teaspoon per wash
  2. Add directly to the drum or dissolve in warm water first
  3. Adjust slightly if needed

Any hard soap bar can also be grated if flakes aren’t available.

Important care notes

Even with gentle products, fabric care matters.

  • Always check garment care labels
  • Avoid hot water
  • Use minimal agitation
  • Test first if washing an unfamiliar fabric

Can I use soap-based washes in a washing machine?
Yes, as long as you use small amounts and choose gentle cycles. Soap works best with low agitation and thorough rinsing.

Will soap damage wool fibres?
No, when used correctly. Pure soap is gentle on wool and has been used for delicate textiles for generations. Avoid hot water and aggressive washing.

Do I need fabric softener when washing wool?
No. Wool softens naturally when rinsed properly. If fabrics feel stiff, it’s usually due to residue rather than a lack of softener.

Is this safe for sensitive skin?
Yes. Both Castile soap and coconut soap flakes are fragrance-free and commonly used for sensitive skin. Always patch-test if you’re unsure.
