Natural, simple Wool & Delicate Wash solutions

Washing wool and other delicate fabrics can feel tricky. They need to be cleaned, but the wrong product can strip fibres, leave residue, or shorten their life. Most commercial detergents are packed with enzymes, brighteners and fragrances that are far too harsh for delicate fibres - not to mention unnecessary.

The solution is simple: go back to good old-fashioned soap.

Soap cleans by loosening dirt and oils so they can be rinsed away, and when used in its purest form it’s gentle enough for wool, silk and other delicate fabrics. Two natural options work beautifully, and you can choose what suits you best:

Liquid Solution – Castile Soap

Castile soap is made from vegetable oils and lye, and it’s one of the mildest liquid soaps you can use. It contains no synthetic fragrances or fillers, so it’s safe for sensitive skin and the environment. Castile soap is biodegradable and suitable for both handwashing and machine washing on a delicate cycle. Use 1–2 tablespoons in place of commercial detergent for delicates or woollens.

A Powder Solution – Coconut Soap Flakes

Coconut soap flakes are another gentle, effective option. Made from pure coconut oil, they clean without harsh chemicals or artificial additives. The flakes dissolve easily in warm water and are hypoallergenic, making them perfect for sensitive fabrics and skin. Start with about a teaspoon per wash and adjust as needed. You can also dissolve the flakes in water before adding them to your wash.

Always Read the Labels

Even with natural solutions, it’s important to follow the care instructions on your garments. Delicate fabrics vary, and what works for one might not suit another. Test a small area first, especially if you’re trying something new, and always avoid hot water or heavy agitation with wool.

Switching to soap for delicates is one of the simplest DIY swaps you can make. It keeps fabrics soft, avoids chemical build-up, and is kinder to your clothes, your skin and the environment.

  • 💡 Tips

After washing with soap, make sure you give everything a good rinse. A great tip is to add some vinegar or citric acid to the rinse water, this will help neutralise any leftover soap scum that makes your clothes stiff.
