Soap in a pump bottle was such an obvious idea that when Robert Taylor launched Softsoap in 1980, he knew the giants would copy it within months. So he mortgaged his company for $12 million and bought every pump in America. All 100 million of them, from the only two factories making them. Nobody else could get one for a year.
