Water, vinegar, alcohol, and essential oils show up across the Under Your Sink recipe collection. The core ingredients do the heavy lifting but each of these plays a specific supporting role. Understanding what that role is makes your recipes work better and helps you avoid some very common mistakes.
Water
Water is the carrier in almost every recipe you'll make. It's what allows other ingredients to spread across a surface, activate properly, and rinse away once they've done their job.
It's easy to overlook, but it does matter in a few specific ways.
- Water hardness: affects how cleaning ingredients behave. Australian tap water is generally on the softer side, so most recipes work as written. In areas with harder water, soaps may lather less and leave more residue, even when nothing else is wrong. If you're troubleshooting a recipe that isn't performing as expected, switching to distilled or demineralised water is worth trying.
- Water temperature: changes how ingredients dissolve and how effectively they work. Warm or hot water dissolves powdered ingredients more thoroughly and helps loosen dirt. Boiling water is specifically called for in some recipes for this reason. Cold water is fine for rinsing but won't activate ingredients the same way.
Water doesn't clean greasy dirt on its own — it rinses. Once an ingredient like soap has lifted the grime, water carries it away. That's its role, and it does it well.
Vinegar
Vinegar is a mild acid, which is exactly what makes it useful in the right situations and useless in the wrong ones.
It works well on mineral deposits, soap scum, and hard water residue. Descaling a kettle, removing build-up from shower screens, or freshening a toilet bowl are all jobs where vinegar makes sense. The acidity reacts with the mineral deposits and helps break them down.
What vinegar doesn't do is clean greasy dirt. That's not what acidity does. If the surface has oil, grease, or general grime, vinegar will move it around without removing it. You need a surfactant (soap) for that.
The other thing worth knowing: vinegar and bicarb don't clean better together. They neutralise each other. The fizz looks active but it's mostly just carbon dioxide gas being released. By the time it settles, neither ingredient is doing much. If you want the acid action of vinegar, keep it away from alkaline ingredients like bicarb.
At the supermarket you'll find two types: white vinegar in the food aisle and cleaning vinegar in the cleaning aisle. White vinegar is food-grade and fermentation-based. Cleaning vinegar is often petroleum-derived. Both are acidic and work similarly, but if you're trying to keep things natural, white vinegar is the one to choose.
Alcohol
Alcohol earns its place in a small number of specific jobs: air fresheners, fabric sprays, room sprays, and products where streak-free drying on glass or stainless steel matters.
The reason it works in those applications is that it evaporates quickly and cleanly. It dissolves light residues, leaves very little behind, and helps disperse essential oil scent in sprays. That fast evaporation is also why it's not especially useful for heavier cleaning tasks, where you actually need the ingredient to dwell on the surface for a period of time.
It also offers mild disinfecting action, though it needs to be at a high enough concentration to be effective and needs contact time to work.
When natural DIY recipes call for alcohol, they usually mean a food-based option like vodka. Isopropyl alcohol is the alternative, but it's petroleum-derived. If you're building a natural cleaning kit, plain vodka is what most Under Your Sink recipes have in mind.
Alcohol isn't something we stock, but it's included here because it appears in enough recipes that it's worth understanding.
Essential oils
Essential oils are the optional part of the system. They don't clean anything, but they're the reason your homemade cleaner smells like something you'd actually want to use.
They're concentrated plant extracts, typically taken from fruit peel, leaves, or stems, and they're used in very small amounts. In cleaning recipes, they add scent, help freshen a space after cleaning, and make the whole experience more pleasant.
A few appear regularly across DIY cleaning recipes:
- Lemon and sweet orange are common in kitchen recipes and general sprays
- Eucalyptus gives a stronger, cleaner finish and works well in bathroom products
- Lemongrass is useful for deodorising and general freshening
Some essential oils (tea tree, for example) are sometimes said to have antibacterial properties, and there is research to support this, but at the concentrations used in DIY cleaning recipes they're not functioning as disinfectants. The scent is the main contribution they're making.
They're completely optional. A recipe without essential oils will clean just as well. Add them if you like how they smell; skip them if you don't, or if fragrance is a concern for anyone in your household.
Essential oils are stored in amber glass bottles to protect them from light, which degrades them over time. A dropper makes it easier to measure small amounts accurately.
The pattern across all four
None of these ingredients carry a recipe on their own. Water is the base, vinegar handles minerals, alcohol finishes and freshens, and essential oils are there if you want them.
Used intentionally and in the right context, each one adds something specific. Used automatically, or in the wrong combination, they either cancel each other out or do nothing useful.
That's the principle behind the whole system: every ingredient has a job, and understanding the job is what makes DIY cleaning actually work.
