Vegetable glycerine is a clear, odourless, slightly viscous liquid derived from plant oils during the soap-making process. Chemically it's a simple polyol (a type of alcohol), which is what gives it such a wide range of uses: it's water-soluble, non-toxic, and compatible with almost every other ingredient in your cleaning toolkit.
It won't clean anything on its own. What it does is make everything else perform better — thickening, stabilising, moisturising, and preventing separation in liquid recipes. Once you start making your own dish liquid, hand wash, or body wash, you'll quickly realise how much glycerine matters.
This glycerine is USP pharmaceutical grade, palm oil free, and non-GMO.
Why buy it pure?
Most commercial liquid soaps and cleaners already contain glycerine — it's just buried in the ingredient list. Buying it as a pure ingredient means you can add exactly as much as you need, know exactly what's in your recipe, and use one bottle across your cleaning and personal care products.
What can I use it for?
What can I use it for?
As a thickener (with xanthan gum)
Glycerine's most important role in DIY recipes is as a partner to xanthan gum. Xanthan gum clumps badly when added directly to water. Mixing it into glycerine first disperses it evenly, so you get a smooth, professional-looking gel rather than lumpy paste. This technique is used in dish liquid, hand wash, toilet gel, body wash, and any other water-based recipe you want to thicken.
As a stabiliser
In liquid recipes that combine water and other ingredients, glycerine helps prevent separation. This keeps your products consistent and effective throughout their shelf life rather than requiring a shake every time you use them.
As a humectant in skin-contact products
Glycerine is a humectant — it attracts and holds moisture. In hand wash, body wash, and other skin-contact products, a small amount helps prevent the drying effect that soaps can sometimes cause. It doesn't add fragrance or colour, just a noticeably gentler feel.
In personal care recipes
It's widely used in DIY moisturisers, face serums, hair conditioners, lip balms, and hydrating mists. A small amount goes a long way in any recipe where skin feel matters.
A note on quantities: glycerine is not a primary ingredient — it's used in small amounts (typically 1–5% of a recipe). More is not better. Too much glycerine in a cleaner can leave surfaces or skin feeling sticky.
Helpful information
Helpful information
Vegetable glycerine is a by-product of saponification (the soap-making process). When plant oils are reacted with an alkali, glycerine is released as a natural co-product. It's then separated, refined, and purified. The result is a simple three-carbon molecule (glycerol) that is completely water-soluble despite feeling like an oil. This is what makes it so useful in water-based DIY recipes — it blends smoothly without separating out.

SAFETY AND STORAGE
Glycerine is very mild and well-tolerated. If using in skin-contact recipes for the first time, a patch test is a sensible starting point. Keep the lid tightly closed between uses, as glycerine is hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture from the air). Store in a cool place away from direct sunlight.
