Castile soap is a concentrated liquid soap that can be used for both personal care and household cleaning.
Unlike most liquid soaps that are designed specifically for skin, or cleaning products that are designed specifically for surfaces, Castile soap sits comfortably between the two. It can be diluted and used in everything from hand wash and body wash to all-purpose cleaning sprays and other simple cleaning solutions.
Why buy it?
Buying Castile soap gives you a flexible liquid soap that can be adapted to suit the jobs you need it for. One bottle can replace multiple products under your sink and in your bathroom, helping simplify your cleaning routine.
What can I use it for?
What can I use it for?
Castile soap is one of the few products in my toolkit that comfortably crosses over between personal care and household cleaning. I've joked for years that you can use it to clean everything from your dishes to your butt - and while that's a bit tongue-in-cheek, it's surprisingly accurate.
Here are some of the ways I use it:
- Hand wash
- Body wash
- Wool and delicate washes
- Dish liquid
- All-purpose cleaning sprays
- General household cleaning
- Washing fruit and vegetables (well diluted)
- Pet washing
Tip: Castile soap is highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Start small and add more if needed.

What is Castile Soap?
Traditional Castile soap was made entirely from olive oil. Modern versions often include other plant oils, such as coconut oil, to improve lather and cleaning performance. Technically this style of soap is known as a Bastille soap, although Castile soap remains the more widely recognised term.
This soap is made from four ingredients:
- Olive oil
- Coconut oil
- Filtered rainwater
- Potassium hydroxide (lye)
During the soap-making process, the oils react with the lye to create soap. The lye is fully consumed during this reaction, so none remains in the finished product.
Why does it go cloudy?
Castile soap can become cloudy or develop a white sediment during colder weather. This is completely normal and happens because of the high olive oil content. As temperatures rise, the soap will return to normal.
Safe for your home

Safety and storage
Store in a cool place away from direct sunlight. The amber glass bottle helps protect the soap from UV light.
Not for consumption.
Avoid mixing Castile soap directly with acidic ingredients such as vinegar or concentrated citric acid, as the reaction can reduce the effectiveness of both products.

Why it's in my toolkit
By the time I discovered Castile soap, I'd already learned how important soap was in cleaning. Coconut Soap Flakes covered my hard soap needs, but I also wanted a liquid soap that I could use throughout the house.
What won me over was how simple it is. I use it in my hand wash, dish liquid, all-purpose spray and wool wash. Instead of buying separate products for each job, I can start with one concentrated soap and dilute it as needed.
It's one of the easiest ingredients in the toolkit to use. You don't need to be precise or overcomplicate it. Dilute it to suit the job, adjust it if needed, and get on with your day.
