A Scent-sational Carpet Freshener Recipe

🌱 DIY Green Cleaning Recipe
By Analisa from Under Your Sink

Commercial carpet fresheners might smell nice at first, but they’re usually loaded with synthetic fragrances and chemicals - not great if you’ve got allergies, pets, or just don’t want to be breathing in unnecessary nasties. This DIY version is a simple way to freshen up your carpets naturally, using ingredients you probably already have under your sink.

Bicarb soda (aka baking soda or sodium bicarbonate) is a legend when it comes to absorbing smells. It’s also got a mild abrasive quality, which means it can help lift light dirt and grime while it sits on the carpet.

Then there’s the essential oils, not just there for the pretty smell! Oils like lavender, lemon, and lemongrass have natural antibacterial and deodorising properties, so they help your space smell fresh without being overpowering. Simple, safe, and actually works. Give it a go.

  • HERE'S THE RECIPE...

    INGREDIENTS
    · 1/2 to 1 cup Bicarb Soda
    · 10-15 drops essential oils of your choice

    MAKES

    Approx. 125g

    METHOD
Mix the bicarb and essential oil in a bowl, I like to use the back of a spoon to really get the essential oils mixed through

    HOW TO USE IT
Sprinkle the mixture very lightly onto your carpet, focusing on high-traffic areas and any spots that need extra attention. Let it sit for at least 15-30 minutes, then vacuum it up thoroughly.

  • 💡 Tips

Less is best, just sprinkle lightly as you do not want to clog up the vacuum.

  • ⚠️ Please Note

I’m not a scientist, just a long-time DIYer with a quirky love for green cleaning. Everything here is based on what works in my home, but every home is a little different. So test, tweak and most importantly - have fun experimenting!
