2 in 1: Dishwashing Liquid & Hand Wash Recipe

Just like the DIY Dishwasher Tablets, this has been a process of trial & error. I have several recipes that all work to varying degrees, this is the recipe that I currently use.

I reuse a 5L distilled water bottle & make up a big batch - excluding the essential oils. Then as needed I refill my dishwashing liquid, hand wash, multi-purpose sprays & laundry liquid. This way I can use different essential oils as I go.

  • 1 tbsp Organic Coconut Soap Flakes
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) Organic Liquid Castile Soap
  • 1/2-1 tsp Xanthan Gum

Optional but recommended

  • 1 tbsp Organic Vegetable Glycerine
  • 15-20 drops Essential Oil *Optional but recommended

  1. Using a pot over medium heat, dissolve the Coconut Soap Flakes in the water.
  2. Add the Organic Liquid Castile Soap, then take of the heat & let cool.
  3. In a separate jug, mix the Vegetable Glycerine & Xanthan Gum until it forms a nice consistent gel.
  4. Emulsify your Essential Oils into this glycerine mixture then add to your soap liquid.
  5. Whisk (or use a stick blender) until it thickens up. Be patient, this will take some time & will thicken more overnight as it sits.
  6. Store in your pump bottle & use as required.

This will make 500ml Dishwashing Liquid

Other Notes

As there are no artificial foaming agents, this is relatively low in suds. To get the best lather, hot water is needed in the sink or on your sponge.

"At first it took some time getting used to the low amount of suds, but I can see it works & wont be going back to plastic store bought detergents" Lisa A

A true soap is the salt of a fatty acid (plant or animal based). Detergents are a mix of synthetic chemicals including fragrance.
