DIY Solutions For Wool & Delicates

Washing delicate woollen items can be a bit of a challenge. You want to clean them effectively without damaging the fibres or causing any shrinkage. But with so many commercial detergents containing harsh chemicals, it can be hard to find a gentle and natural solution.

That's where good old fashion soap comes in! It's easy, effective, and all-natural.

Liquid Solution: Castile Soap

Castile soap is a natural soap made from vegetable oils and lye. It is known for its gentle and effective cleaning properties, making it an ideal choice for washing delicate items such as wool. Castile soap is free of harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances, making it safe for sensitive skin and the environment. Additionally, it is biodegradable and can be used in both high-efficiency and standard washing machines.

Simple add 1-2 tablespoons to your handwashing or delicate wash in the machine, just like you would with any other detergent.

Powder Solution: Coconut Soap Flakes

Coconut soap flakes are a natural alternative to traditional laundry detergents. They are made from coconut oil and are a gentle yet effective way to clean delicate fabrics. They are hypoallergenic and free from harsh chemicals, making them a great option for those with sensitive skin or allergies. Additionally, they are biodegradable and environmentally friendly, making them a sustainable choice for laundry.

You only need a small amount, to start off with add 1 teaspoon first and add more depending on the size of the load. You can dilute it first in some warm water.

Follow up with a good rinse

After washing with soap, make sure you give everything a good rinse. A great tip is to add some vinegar or citric acid to the rinse water, this will help neutralise any leftover soap scum that makes your clothes stiff.

Follow the labels

Always make sure you follow the labels and washing instructions on your clothing and fabrics. It's not a bad idea to test a small patch before trying something new as well.
