Laundry Whitener & Brightener Guide

Historically bleach has been the number one thing to brighten your white clothes. We should hopefully all know by now how dangerous chlorine bleach is! Lucky there are safer alternatives that do the job just as well.

Sunlight is the number one natural ingredient to get your whites bright - whenever possible get them drying in the sun. Before that, you may wish to try one our suggestions below.

Each of the following ingredients have some brightening & whitening power (thanks to its Hydrogen atoms). You can use them on their own or in a blend. Here they are listed in order of most powerful to least

  1. Sodium Percarbonate
  2. Borax
  3. Bicarb

It is just a matter if mixing a small quantity as need in a bowl, taking care not to breathe in any of the raised dust. The amount you use will depend on the size of your container with water & how much clothes are being soaked - but to give you an idea 1/4 cup should do a large load in the washing machine.

Here are some suggested blends for one soaking proportions.

Blend Option 1:

  • 1/2 Washing Soda
  • 1/2 Crystal Clear

Blend Option 2:

  • 1/2 Borax
  • 1/4 Washing Soda
  • 1/4 Bicarb Soda

Blend Option 3:

  • Straight Crystal Clear Percarbonate

As required

How to use it

For best results these ingredients are looking for heat & time. The hotter & longer you can soak your clothes the better results. However you need to consider delicate items & fabrics can eventually wear from constant heat & cleaning products.

To use, simply dilute in your container/sink of hot water & then add the clothes you wish to soak. Let soak for as long as possible/required & then wash as normal.
