Time to Detox Your Home

Time to Detox Your Home

For your home detox to begin, first and foremost you must be in the right frame of mind. Do not take on this challenge if you’re not in 'the mood'.

So, if you’re not in 'the mood' read through this program and visualise all of this happening in your home and start getting motivated - otherwise just wait for the full moon - that always works for me!

Now to start, we are going to go through your current 'cleaning kit' and have you set up with all the ingredients & tools to clean your home naturally.

STEP 1 – Gather your current cleaning products

Clear some space - use your kitchen bench, table, floor or whatever is available to you

Pull out all the cleaning equipment you have under your sinks. This includes sprays, detergents, bleach, rags, mops, feather dusters, brooms – any apparatus or product you would use to clean your home.

STEP 2 – Dispose of your toxic cleaners

If a lot of the products sitting around you now are from a supermarket shelf, there is a very good chance it contains many unnatural ingredients that are known to cause health issues. You are probably also surrounded by a lot of plastic.

Unfortunately, even a lot of the Eco-Friendly or Organic Cleaning products are a big con. Many still contain petroleum based products and are ‘detergents’ that cause major issues for our aquatic life. Plus, if they come in a one-use plastic bottle then FAIL anyway.

If you have

  • Dishwashing Liquid
  • Surface Spray
  • Windex
  • Bleach
  • Ammonia
  • Oven Cleaner
  • Mould Killer
  • Isoprophyl (Rubbing) Alcohol
  • Methylated Spirits

Then time to say goodbye!! Normally I would suggest re-purposing any bottles you can, but in the case of these contaminated plastics its time to let it go. But you need to let it go safely!!

Yes, its going to take you that extra time to find a suitable recycling place near you – but you only need to do it once and I promise you will feel awesome about it.

In Victoria, Australia the local council aid in disposing of your toxic household waste – so my first tip would be to check with your local council.  Here is a great link for people in Melbourne – CLICK HERE

STEP 3 – Get your green cleaning basics

Some of these ingredients will be familiar and others not so much, but together with a few pantry items you can make all-natural versions of the commercial cleaners you just rid from your life.

First, you will need to stock up on some alkaline powders. The three sodium’s below can be sourced naturally from mineral deposits in certain parts of the world or can a be made synthetically through a Solvay process. It can be very difficult to determine how it was made unless specifically stipulated. We only stock the naturally harvested version at Under Your Sink

  1. Sodium Carbonate (Washing Soda)
  2. Sodium Bicarbonate (Bicarb Soda)
  3. Sodium Borate (Borax)
  4. Crystal Clear (Sodium Percarbonate)

Next, in replace of synthetic ‘detergents’ you can simply use soap. A solid version is great in products like laundry powder and dishwasher tablets whilst a liquid version is great for cleaning sprays, dishes et

  1. Organic Coconuts Soap Flakes (solid soap)
  2. Liquid Castile Soap (liquid soap)

Now, we need something acidic to act as a solvent & disinfectant.

  1. White Edible Vinegar – naturally fermented
  2. Citric Acid

This part is option but very handy, I call them the thickener combo. Using Xanthan gum alone or with the glycerine emulsifier you're able to thicken your liquid creations.

  1. Xanthan Gum
  2. Vegetable Glycerine

Finally, the Essential Oils – well the name speaks for itself 😊 Building up a collection of 100% pure Essential Oils is an excellent investment in you!

STEP 4 – Get Your Glass Storage

First always try and re-purpose anything you have around the home to store your homemade creations. Get creative!

However, when it comes to your spray bottles I highly recommend Amber Glass Bottles with Canyon Trigger Sprays.

The coloured glass protects your product from direct sunlight, making them stay fresher & last longer! The Canyon Trigger Sprays are chemical resistant, powerful and top quality – they can cope with your Essential Oils and the acidic products unlike all other cheap versions that I guarantee will die on you within 3 months.

STEP 5 – Make your first natural green cleaning products

STEP 6 – Make a space for your Green Cleaning Kit

Have one place to store all of your cleaning ingredients, products and tools. Whether it be Under Your Sink, in a storage cupboard or a box - keep it all together in one spot. Clean that space out, make sure its fresh and well organised.

STEP 7 – Congratulate Yourself

You have not only taken the first steps, you have taken 6 😊
